Time to Get Ready – Company's Coming
It’s getting to be that time of year… The holidays will be here before we know it. We’re all aware of the obvious things that need doing, like getting the house clean and decorated before company arrives. But there’s a deeper level of preparation that often gets overlooked.
Imagine your in-laws coming to stay with you for Thanksgiving. Depending on the type of relationship you have with them, they may or may not mention that the mattress in the spare bedroom is a bit tired, and therefore so are they because they didn’t sleep well.
There are so many things that we get used to and don’t notice but that might make guests hesitate (like the stains on the dining room chairs), and others that we don’t notice because we don’t use them ourselves (like the old mattress in the guest room). Here are a few things to start thinking about now, while you have plenty of time to remedy things before guests arrive.
Give your home a good decluttering, including all closets, drawers, and basements for a renewed, fresh energy in your home.
Repair or reupholster any furniture that feels wobbly, has stains, or where the padding doesn’t quite make the grade anymore.
Check for any plumbing issues so you don’t have to explain to each guest exactly how to jiggle the toilet handle in order to get it to flush.
If your guest mattress(es) need replacing but a new mattress isn’t in the budget, consider getting a mattress topper.
Make sure your guest towels and sheets are clean and fresh. Replace if needed.
Make sure you’ve had your chimney cleaned and inspected to ensure there are no surprises during the cozy fire on Thanksgiving.
Taking these steps will ensure that your guests will feel comfortable and well cared for. That said, we know that sometimes it’s hard to see our own things from someone else’s point of view.
