Is Your Closet Ready for Warmer Weather?

Ahh, spring! Ok, technically spring started in March, but now we’re really feeling it. Flowers are blooming, the rainy season is over… and taxes are done! It’s time to relax into the beauty of longer days and warmer nights.

That all sounds good, but like any transition, there may be some bumps. For instance, our closets. And dressers. And shelves. And clothes in storage. Having trouble finding your favorite capris? Can’t remember where the most comfortable sandals you’ve ever owned ended up?

Don’t worry, it happens to all of us at some point. The most important thing we can do when we encounter these potentially frustrating situations is to make changes and put new systems in place on the spot. As we always say, it’s never too late, and the perfect time to start is today!

So here are a few tips for smoothing the clothing transition between seasons that will help to avoid issues in the future:

  • Get critical. When you go to store your winter clothing, don’t automatically put it all away. This is the ideal time to evaluate each piece in your wardrobe. Do you have items that you didn’t wear even once this year? It may be time to get rid of them. Are some items getting tired and ready to be replaced? This is the perfect time to replace them, as winter clothing always goes on sale in the spring. So purchase any needed replacements, and put those in storage instead.

  • Think outside the box. A fun way to store items, particularly if you don’t have a lot of storage space, is to get clever – such as having your decorations double as storage. You might get an attractive trunk to keep at the foot of your bed, or use under-the-bed storage containers. These both have the advantage of keeping your clothing close to your closet, even though it’s out of sight.

  • Make a list. This may be the most important tip of all, no matter what storage solutions you use. Find a spot in your closet, or wherever makes sense for your situation, and post a list of all of your seasonal items and where they are stored. It can be as simple as “Shoes – bin in basement closet; sweaters – drawer under bed, etc.” But it can make all the difference in the world in six months!

The best thing about these tips is that they don’t have to all be done at once. You can implement them as gradually or quickly as needed – whatever works best for your life and schedule. And as always, we at Morgan Organizers are more than happy to help with clothing storage solutions and more! Give us a call any time. 301-787-4010
