How to Begin Decluttering When You Are Overwhelmed

Life is so busy these days that we can all start to feel like hoarders – not necessarily because we collect so much stuff, but because it can be so hard to find the time to organize our homes and the things that we have. And when we do find the time, we just don’t know where to start.

This is one of those cases where the saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” has never been more true. See, most people tend to look at their cluttered house and feel defeated before they even begin, as if it’s a thousand mile journey that feels too big. So they just never begin.

But here’s the thing. We can only take one step at a time. So whether it’s the first step, the hundredth, or the last, the only thing that matters is that we keep walking. So how does this apply to decluttering?

Easy. Don’t look at everything that needs to be done. Look only at the one thing you can do right now. Let’s say you only have ten minutes. You can still take one step toward organization. Perhaps you can clear three things from the fridge that you keep noticing are past their expiration date, or sort the mail pile. Every little step matters, and gets you closer to being organized.

What if you have an hour? Great! Choose one bite-sized, manageable project that you can actually finish in that time. Maybe it’s organizing a drawer or three in your bathroom, or sorting and folding the laundry. The important thing is to keep finding time, no matter how much, to take a few more steps toward decluttering on a regular basis.

Even when taking small steps, it can still be easy to feel overwhelmed. Sometimes it’s easier to take that first step when you have someone walking by your side. At Morgan Organizers, we’re more than happy to help you take those first steps, or even to take all of the steps for you to get you organized.
